The good news is that banana nog is actually pretty healthy. That's why it was my drink of choice that year instead of hot cocoa (I had not yet figured out how to make The Skinniest Cocoa of them All). It's even pretty quick to toss together, so I didn't spend as much of my writing time procrastinating in the kitchen.

Over the years my hot cocoa recipe has evolved. When I went vegan, I swapped out the milk for non-dairy milk. That was pretty easy. Then I started sweetening it with stevia instead of sugar. That took a bit of getting used to, since the sweet of stevia isn’t quite like the sweet of sugar. Finally, I swapped out the non-dairy milk for peppermint tea...and created a beverage that I could drink a half gallon of for under 100 calories. It’s not creamy like traditional hot cocoa, but if you like dark chocolate, it’s definitely worth trying.
Allow me to introduce you to my 2016 NaNoWriMo beverage of choice:

I have a confession to make: I love pie. In fact, when I was a teenager, I had pie for my birthday every year instead of cake. I even force-fed one of my friends apple pie because he'd never had it before...and that's just wrong.
My mom has had a big garden for as long as I can remember, and the strawberries and rhubarb made it into jam and pie...and now my smoothies. Strawberry rhubarb custard pie is my favorite, and while this can't quite compete with that delicious sugary concoction, it's about as close as a smoothie can get.

However, I really like this dressing. Not enough that I'd just drink it, but it makes milder greens like spinach and leaf lettuces more than bearable--almost tasty. This is a pretty big batch, so you might want to cut the recipe to 1/2 or 1/3, especially the first time you try it.

We try to eat as healthfully as we can whilst keeping sane. A few homemade "convenience foods" like this Italian Bean Soup and my Taco Soup help a lot.

Some of you may remember the whole wheat oil-free vegan bread machine bread recipe that I adapted from a Hitachi bread machine recipe found in The New McDougall Cookbook. I totally thought I had it perfected, but I've done further experimentation and the new version rises higher and has a slightly better structure, so I thought I'd post an update with new pictures. I took my photos in better lighting last time, but I think you'll still be able to see the difference.

Our need for fresh bread always seems to sneak up on me. Sometimes I bake a couple of loaves and think "This should be enough for the rest of the week," and then my husband starts eating it for snacks and I run out and have to make some on Thursday or else I won't have anything to send in his lunches on Friday or for him to eat for breakfast (he is not an oatmeal person and gets up too early to run the blender).
