I still remember my first accounting class. It was the fall of 2019, right before everything went online due to COVID. Like most first-term students, I was used to thinking of debits as decreases and credits as increases. That is how banks usually present it on your accounts, after all. But it turns out that debits and credits are a bit more complicated than that. Some account categories increase with debits and decrease with credits, while others are the reverse. It's enough to leave a first-term student pulling their hair out in frustration.

The DEALER Acronym

In my initial push to understand and get a grasp on the rules of debits and credits, I discovered the DEALER acronym:

Dividends, Expenses, Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Revenue

The first three account types are normal debit accounts. These are increased by debits and decreased by credits.

• D- Dividends (or Draws)
• E- Expenses
• A- Assets

The next three account types are normal credit accounts. These are increased by credits and decreased by debits.

• L- Liabilities
• E- Equity
• R- Revenue

But this still left me with the question, "Why does it work that way?" With some accounting issues, "because XYZ authority says so" is a perfectly valid explanation. GAAP and taxes, for instance. But not here. This is mostly a math issue.

The Accounting Equation

Eventually I came across the accounting equation. Like most students, I first learned it as:

Assets = Liabilities + Equity

This is a good start, but the equation can be fleshed out a bit more. Since revenues increase equity while expenses and dividends decrease equity, we can expand the equation to show those relationships explicitly:

Assets = Liabilities + Equity + Revenue - Expenses - Dividends

With a basic understanding of what those accounts are, this seems pretty logical, right? But we are going to rearrange this equation so that there are no subtraction symbols. To do this, we will add Expenses and Dividends to both sides, cancelling out the negative on the right and moving them to the left.

Dividends + Expenses + Assets = Liabilities + Equity + Revenue

And there we have the DEALER acronym again. Accounts to the left of the equals sign are normal debit accounts and accounts to the right are normal credit accounts. The accounting equation is just that--an equation. As such, it must always be kept equal. An increase to one account must always be balanced by either an increase to an account on the opposite side of the equation or a decrease to another account on the same side. This is the basis for double-entry bookkeeping. This is how T-accounts work.

Final Thoughts

Mnemonics like DEALER are useful—they help you remember the rules. But understanding where those rules come from makes them much harder to forget. Once I saw how the accounting equation and double-entry bookkeeping fit together, debits and credits stopped feeling like six unrelated rules to memorize and started feeling like one logical system. With that understanding, I was able to turn around after each class and tutor one of my classmates on the day's material rather than struggling to just remember how debits and credits work. Even now, nearly seven years later, I can't forget the rules of debits and credits.

This was immensely helpful when I was completing my bank reconciliation project for my accounting portfolio. Understanding the fundamentals let me recognize when something didn't look right. I was able to question ChatGPT's reasoning about the solution and the steps to get there.  I'm not saying that the AI wasn't useful (it was great for generating the scenario and providing feedback to improve the writing), but I do not expect it to get everything right on its own. Remember that AI, especially those like ChatGPT which are prone to hallucinations, are a tool, not a replacement for knowing the material.

So why on earth do banks present your cash accounts (assets) as increasing with credits and decreasing with debits? Is there any internal logic to this? Yes. Yes, there is.

From your perspective, the account is an asset because it represents money you own. But banks consider users' cash accounts liabilities. They are just holding onto the money for you and are obligated to give it back. That's why, from the bank's perspective, the account increases with credits and decreases with debits. So no, banks don't do debits and credits "backwards." They just have a different perspective of the account.

I have once again neglected this blog for far too long. When you see what I've been up to, I think you'll understand. First up, business:

Accounting Stuff

Life keeps happening, and I have not yet managed to get into the accounting industry. However, I have renewed my learning efforts. This week I completed the accounts payable aging project for my accounting portfolio, and there will be many more projects to come.

I am also using ChatGPT to develop a strategy for making connections in the accounting industry in my local area. This week I plan to start reaching out to CPA and tax firms to ask them what sorts of projects they would most like to see in an entry-level candidate's portfolio/skill set.

I have some ideas for videos as well, so stay tuned for those.

• My first accounting capstone class (2021) at Chemeketa Community College Featured Steve's book Accounting Best Practices 7th Edition. I remembered how useful that book was, especially in discussions of internal controls, and that got me excited about the podcast.
• I have been listening to the oldest episodes first since it seems to increase in complexity until it begins to focus on more contemporary issues, and I want a review of some basics.
• In the early episodes, Steve has some guests or co-hosts who have truly terrible accounting puns, and I love it.

• Journal of Accountancy Podcast produced by the AICPA and CIMA
• For this one, I have been listening to the newest episodes first and working backwards since it has good coverage of contemporary issues that I don't want to miss.
• My favorite recent episode is The Power of Active Listening in Addressing the CPA Skills Gap, which touches on The Profession Ready Initiative.
• A quick look into The Profession Ready Initiative led me to an article on JoA titled "How will accountants learn new skills when AI does the work?" That article was thought-provoking, and I will write a blog post or make a video about that in the near future.
• AI: Accounting Intelligence with Isaac Heller
• As the title suggests, this one focuses on artificial intelligence in accounting, which I think is a natural use for AI.
• Some of the early episodes seem a bit cheerleadery, like "get with the program. Accounting is changing," which isn't terribly useful to me as someone who already accepts that this is part of the profession. I may try listening to it in reverse order to see if I like that better. 

Books and More Books

Just before Lent (February) this year, I realized that I had twenty-six books on my "Currently Reading" list. Twenty-six! So I decided I was not allowed to add any new books to that list until Easter. That was my fast. In that time I finished a bunch of books that I had started, and since Easter I have finished many more. So far this year I have finished 40 books including:

• Most of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series (I started it last year). With the show's steady downward trend after season one and Henry Cavill leaving after season three, I decided that if I wanted to enjoy the story, I needed to just go to the source material.
• The Margaret of Ashbury trilogy by Judith Merkle Riley. Highly recommend this one for anyone who likes early medieval historical and fantasy books. These have been my favorite fiction read so far this year.
• Six books of poems or on the art of writing poetry.
• Two books on keeping chickens that convinced me not to do that right now.
• A cheesy mystery novel written for French learners.
• Ten books on religion and mythology.
• Five books on gardening.

My Garden

Since moving to my current place in April of 2025, building a kitchen garden has been one of my big projects.

My philosophy is that food gardening should save me more money than it costs me, so I have been working with salvaged materials like pallets, scrap lumber, old gates, pre-owned chicken wire, old tires, upcycled kitty litter buckets, stones I dug out of the ground (very laborious, but abundant), and soil I sifted myself. I have started as many plants as I can from seed since that is much less expensive. In total, I think I have bought all of six or seven plants, and they were all perennial herbs that I could not get starts for from friends or family. I have also been given quite a few plants, from berry bushes to herb starts. My mother, who was a home economics major and is pretty inventive herself, had better be proud of me.

In addition to fruits, vegetables, and herbs, I have also planted quite a few flowers, all from seed. Most of the flowers are edible or medicinal, but some just deter pests and attract beneficial insects. The garden is a whole system, and I have learned it functions better if I work with nature rather than against it.

While this project needs a few more beds filled to be truly complete, it has moved from being primarily a construction project to an established system that produces a significant amount of food. I anticipate canning many batches of pasta sauce and salsa in the coming months as the tomatoes begin to ripen.

Nearly eight months ago, I started a lightfastness test for a set of watercolor markers, a set of jelly gouache, and three watercolor palettes, including a metallic 24 set and a classic 48 set from GenCrafts. I made wide swatch cards with each color, then cut them in half lengthwise so that I had each color on two strips from the same swatch. The control side went into a drawer for later comparison.

Paper Used:

With this particular lightfastness test, I made the mistake of using two different papers from the same company and assuming they were the same, or close enough. The small pad came free with my 24 set of metallic GenCrafts paints while I bought the larger pad separately. The paper from the smaller pad ended up turning brown in the sunlight, which made it harder to accurately detect fading and color shifts in the first 41 colors on the classic palette. The metallic palette was tested completely on the larger paper that did not brown, so those results are a bit easier to decipher. In the future, I will make sure to use a tried-and-true paper for my lightfastness tests.

GenCrafts Watercolor Swatches Before:

Colors 1-48 are the colors from the "classic" set. Colors 49-72 are from the "metallic" set. White paints were applied over a Sharpie scribble to show opacity (or lack thereof).

Conditions:

The strips went up in a double-paned vinyl south-facing window from March 21st to October 25th of this year (about 7 months). Near the equinoxes, these strips got full sun exposure, but at the height of summer, the eaves on the roof left them with only indirect light. This is enough to show fading in the most unstable pigments, though a longer test might have been better to test some of the paints.

I eventually took all of my test strips down because I noticed some condensation on the window in the mornings after I rearranged my room to put the bed closer to the window. That may have messed with some of the results from other paints, but the strips for the GenCrafts palettes did not seem to be affected.

Hypothesis:

These are student-grade paints, so I expected that some of the colors would fade and some would not. I expected that colors would fade more when applied in a light wash like watercolor than thickly in mass tone. I had not seen any other lightfast tests online for these paints when I went looking, so I didn't have any specific colors to watch out for based on that. Bright purples and pinks are often fugitive (because of dye-based pigments) while earth tones tend to be inexpensively made with more stable pigments, so it would not surprise me if the purples and pinks faded the most and earth tones were most stable.

Results:

In the classic 48-set, I found the worst fading in magenta, rose pink, orange, peach, ruby red, fuschia, yellow green, lavender, and "red brown" (which is a burgundy color that doesn't look brown at all). There also seemed to be some fading in cadmium red, red orange, tangerine, orange yellow, indian yellow, yellow, olive, forest green, amethyst, purple, cobalt teal, golden brown, umber, brown, light brown, and green gold. I noticed shifts in neon yellow, crimson, olive, grass green, royal blue, cobalt teal, and royal purple, though it is difficult to tell if all of those were the paints or if some of them were caused by the browning of the paper. All other colors seemed unaffected, though I'm not going to list them out because there are 18 and I've written enough redundant lists today. The most interesting thing to note for this palette is that a surprising number of the earth tones faded, which is not what I expected to happen.

In the metallic set, I found the worst fading in the bubblegum pink, mint, and magenta. Powder pink, coral, grass green, orange, cadmium red, and violet also had significant fading or shifts. I noticed a slight fade with the yellow and "tangerine" (which looks more like the inside of a ruby grapefruit than any part of a tangerine).

I was excited to note that a few of my favorite paints from both sets did not fade or shift. These included calypso, moss, and Caribbean in the classic set, and sea foam and turquoise in the metallic set. Much rejoicing. Those were some of the unique colors that compelled me to buy the GenCrafts paints in the first place, so I'm happy.

Takeaways:

I'm not sure yet how this test will affect my process because I don't remember which paints from the classic 48 set I kept, and which I passed on to a budding young artist when I restructured my student-grade paint collection to have all of my favorite paints in one set. In general, I like to avoid the most fugitive pigments and use some form of UV protection for gifts, but I also have a Paul Reuben's 48-color palette that is a bit more lightfast than either the GenCrafts classic or the Mei Liang 36-set that I also did a lightfast test on. Since I gave away 26 of the colors from the GenCrafts classic palette, I won't be able to repeat the lightfast test on that entire set, but I may repeat it on the colors I still have, especially any that were tested on the paper that turned brown during the test.

When I tore apart my GenCrafts classic 48 and Mei Liang 36 palettes to make a 48-color palette of my favorite paints, I referenced Kimberly Crick's lightfast test on the Mei Liang set so that I could remove the most fugitive colors from that palette, but I had no idea which colors in the GenCrafts set would be good and which would fade. The final palette had 26 Mei Liang colors and 22 GenCrafts colors. I'm hoping that I used predominantly Mei Liang colors for the earth tones since they were all pretty lightfast and I prefer the formulation/texture/transparency of that paint anyway, but I won't know until I dig out the palette and look. That may be a post for another day.

Conditions:

The strip with colors 15-21 had water damage from condensation in addition to the paper turning brown from sun exposure, so it is especially difficult to say which colors faded.

While the strip with colors 29-35 also received some water damage, most of these are earth tones, which tend to be stable anyway. The only color of concern on that strip is the olive green, which may have faded or shifted, but it is hard to tell because of the water damage and paper browning.

My results came out less scientific than I wanted because of the water damage and condensation issues. I noticed major fading on the vermillion (7), carmine (9), madder red (11), and fresh purple (14). I noticed more subtle fading in lemon yellow (2), orange yellow (4), cadmium orange (5), scarlet (8), violet red (13), and deep violet (15). There also seemed to be a color shift in cadmium orange (5), rose red (12), sky blue (17), Prussian blue (22), Payne's grey (23), yellow green (24), tree green (25), deep hooker's green (27), and olive green (29). It's difficult to say, however, if all of the minor fading and color shifts are from the paint itself, or if the browning paper and water damage are contributing issues.

 Overall, my results seem pretty consistent with Kimberly Crick's, if a bit less fading because of the shorter test time. In any area where my opinion deviates from hers, I'm inclined to say that her test was more likely to be correct anyway. I don't plan to repeat the lightfast test on this palette because I have already given away ten of the colors in a palette restructure.

I don't often use gouache, but when I do, it's usually to save a watercolor piece where my colors got muddy from painting things in an incorrect order or not waiting for things to dry properly before continuing. For example, it helped me to save this sunflower painting where the green was badly bleeding into the sunflowers. The opacity of gouache makes it useful for this kind of art rescue mission.

Since I so rarely use gouache, this lightfast test isn't going to change much about my creative process. I don't feel like I need to run out and buy a more lightfast professional-grade set. If I were to make a gouache piece with the intent to give it as a gift, however, I think I would avoid the "purple" (pink), nude, grass green, violet, and pale purple. I would also make sure to use a UV protective coating or frame it under UV protective glass before giving it to the recipient. For the money, I still think these are a good value and I would recommend them to anyone casually interested in gouache.

It seems that I have once again gone over a year without updating this blog, so this is going to be another life update post.

Family Crisis

In my last post, I mentioned that my parents had covid. Shortly after that post, my dad was hospitalized because of covid symptoms and, while he was already in the hospital, had a major stroke. He passed away a few days later on January 3, 2022, at about 4:30 p.m. At some point, I discovered that day was JRR Tolkien’s birthday, and I had a weird mental flash of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis heckling him about showing up late for the birthday party because of the time difference.

The idea of my dad hanging out and arguing with some of my favorite dead authors somehow made the initial grieving process easier, but I still have moments where missing him hits me out of nowhere. Recently my boyfriend was teaching me to drive a manual transmission car and that gave me flashbacks to when my dad was first teaching me to drive. That was a bittersweet moment.

Education

With my dad’s passing, I ended up switching to online classes for winter term of my junior year so that I could help my mom with memorial details, sorting out her finances, and help her move into her new house. That took about half of the term, but after most of the urgent items were taken care of, I drove back to my dorm in La Grande. Fortunately, in-person versions of most of my classes were also offered and my instructors were agreeable, so I was able to sit in on class lectures and participate with my classmates for the second half of the term. I took as many in-person classes as I could spring term, then moved in with my mom for the summer while I continued to take classes online and helped her with more details of her fire insurance claim.

For my senior year, most of the classes I needed to graduate were only being offered online, so I didn’t think it was worth moving back to La Grande. I completed my last year online, which enabled me to move out of state. I graduated September 8, 2023, with my Bachelor of Science in Accounting with an additional 20-credit focus in managerial accounting. I graduated summa cum laude with a cumulative GPA of 3.99, which surprised absolutely no one who knows me.

Washington Move & Relationship

So why did I move out of state? The short answer is “because I could.” As far as I could tell from my research, state residency requirements for tuition prices are set based on the previous year, so it was the first time moving out of state was a viable option for me.

The long answer involves romance. A few years ago, I briefly dated someone from Washington, but between the distance and some other issues, our relationship was short-lived. In May of 2022, I started a long-distance relationship with someone else from Washington, but because I was now able to move out of Oregon without a tuition hike, that relationship only had to be long-distance for about four months. In September of 2022, I moved to Frederickson, Washington (close to Puyallup and Tacoma) and I have lived there ever since.

So who am I dating? Considering that my last relationship ended within a few months of posting about it here, I’m disinclined to answer that. However, I’ve been dating this person for about a year and a half now and I feel good about it. We’ve talked about getting married, but he wants me to change my last name, and I have no desire to sign a long last name again. This is a stupid dispute, but one that I care way too much about. After putting in an absurd amount of time and effort to change my name back to my maiden name during covid, I don’t want to deal with that ever again.

Little Brother's Business

My little brother is getting married! In about a week and a half, he and his Korean fiancé are tying the knot. Unfortunately, plane tickets over there are expensive and I can't afford that right now, but I'm hoping to be able to visit him in the next year or so after I start making grown-up money. My Current Pursuits

I was fortunate enough to receive one of EOU’s ten scholarships for the Institute of Management Accountants’ Certified Management Accountant program. This scholarship covers a CMA review course of my choice, three years of IMA membership, and fees for my first attempts at the two parts of the CMA exam. Thus, my next step is to study a lot, schedule my exams, and take them. Long-term, passing this exam and getting the two years of work experience required for my CMA will help me to stand out in the management accounting world. I’ve also considered pursuing my CPA since I only need 4 more college credits to be eligible to sit for that exam, but one certification is enough to pursue at a time.

I am also hunting for my first post-graduation job in the field of accounting. Even though I’ve taken two classes on resumes, cover letters, and the job-searching process, this is a bit overwhelming for me, so I’ve been procrastinating on my search by doing too many chores around my house and generally falling into old patterns from when I was a housewife. Today I determined that I needed to get out of the house to avoid all those distractions, so I’ve been camped out at the library for several hours. This has helped immensely.

Honestly, I think my job search classes may have made the job searching process more complicated than necessary. My classes stressed the importance of customizing my resume to each job posting, which is great if the job is one I really want, but I think there is also merit to having a basic accounting resume for quick applications. For instance, I don’t want to overwhelm myself if I find a good job posting and don’t have time to make a more customized resume. I also don't think that every job opportunity is so great that it warrants putting in hours of work just to apply. So today I made a basic accounting resume and sent it to a friend to look over. Tomorrow I will take another look at Indeed and an accounting firm’s website to see what positions I want to apply for. Wish me luck.

Whew! I don't know about you all, but I'm still recovering from 2020, and 2022 is just around the corner. A lot has happened in my life, and I want to take some time to get you caught up to speed.

Education

When I last wrote about pursuing college, I wasn't sure what my degree focus would be or how far I would go. Ultimately, I chose the accounting program at Chemeketa Community College. I started in September of 2019 and finished my associate of applied science in accounting this June. I picked up other certificates in accounting, payroll, and tax preparation along the way by strategically choosing my classes to meet those requirements.

I chose Chemeketa as a default school; it was the closest public school to my home and an easy choice. When I started, I wasn't sure how far I would go, so I chose a program that had a lot of little segments. I could get a 1-year certificate or a 2-year degree. I got both, but it was nice having those milestones along the way so that I didn't feel like I was wasting time and money if I couldn't complete something bigger. 

Because of other life circumstances that I'll go into later, I decided to continue past community college and go to a university. That was a trickier decision. Where would I go? There was no default choice, so I had to do a lot of research, talk to representatives of various schools, apply for scholarships at each school...it was a lot. I applied to three schools, applied for scholarships at those three schools, and was awarded similar scholarships for all three. In the end, I discovered that Eastern Oregon University had the most efficient policy for applying my past credits to gen ed requirements, which would allow me to graduate in another two years, rather than another three or more.

That left another interesting decision to make. Would I attend in person or online? Their whole accounting degree is offered online, so either choice was viable. But with all the online classes I've had to take during the pandemic, I was ready to be around some other humans. So I did what any sophisticated 27-year-old college student would do--I decided to live on-campus in La Grande.

So that's where I am now education-wise. I'm working on my bachelor of science in accounting. I'm debating whether I want to complete an additional focus in managerial accounting or if I want to try to get my master's and go for my CPA, but it'll be a little while yet before I have to make that decision.

Personal Catastrophes

In what weird universe can I live on-campus in a dorm, even one where I get a whole bedroom to myself? Well, that's another long story.

In addition to the murder hornets, pandemic, and all that jazz from 2020, I also got divorced that year. It was a difficult decision that we arrived at after six months of counseling and trying to make it work. I moved back in with my parents, which was weird after being gone seven years.

Then in September, the Beachie Creek wildfire came through. We evacuated around 2:30 a.m. after the emergency order blared over our cell phones. I had packed a bag to go camping in a couple of days, so I grabbed that and some of my sentimental stuff. That was a whole big emotional experience, and I'm not going to recount it now. In the end, the house burned down. I spent two weeks couch surfing until my parents found a tiny place to rent in Stayton, then I moved in with my grandma.

The insurance claim process was a veritable nightmare. The sheer quantity of work involved was awful. I have the distinct feeling that the process is designed to be as user-unfriendly as possible to discourage people from filing their whole claim and reduce the amount that the insurance company has to pay. My insurance provider is State Farm, but I'm guessing it's probably similar with most companies. On top of that, my claims agent's office made multiple mistakes, and that was its own emotional roller-coaster.

So between my divorce and losing most of my stuff in a fire, it makes a lot more sense that I'd be able to live in a dorm suite; there wasn't a lot tying me down when I moved to La Grande. My parents are rebuilding, and their house is nearly done now.

Other Stuff

I'm dating again. Here's a picture of my boyfriend and me. We've been dating since summer. Aren't we cute?

I'm also learning to use LinkedIn and trying to revamp this website to better fit with my personal brand now that I'm not trying to write novels. I'll be updating my tagline, paring down social media accounts to things I can actually use, and generally pretending to be a real adult in the name of professionalism. That said, this blog isn't going to be about accounting, at least not anytime soon. It's still a hobby blog, and I'm excited to share some of my recent hobby activities with you guys.

I took a drawing class last term, and that was fun. Here's a picture of my bedroom wall where I stapled a bunch of my projects.

From there I started doing a personal exploration in watercolor. I did a few paintings for Christmas presents including a crab, a skunk, a pterodactyl, a lighthouse landscape, and a mountain landscape. I think the landscapes look best, so enjoy.

I did these with dollar store watercolors since I wasn't sure if I would stick with the medium, but after doing a few, I decided to order a nicer set online. That should be arriving in the next couple of days, and I'm excited about that.

This afternoon I finally get to do some Christmasy stuff with a couple of my siblings and my grandma. My parents are down with covid, so I probably won't get the chance to see them while I'm in town, and that's a bit of a bummer. I should, however, get to see my little brother and get to meet his girlfriend while they're here from Korea, so that's cool.

Eventually I'll write more about the whole house burning down thing, but I think this is more than enough for today. I hope you're all having a good holiday season and that your travels are safe.
